Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods

December 20, 2012 · 9 comments

Sweet ‘n salty aficionados, welcome to the easiest, most fun holiday activity ever.

Honestly, it really could only be more simple if you bought these, but with 3490 cups of hot coffee to drink and a Sim City community to attend to (what, you haven’t been playing Super Nintendo all week?), who wants to leave the house?

Let’s talk about supplies.  The essentials here, quite obviously, are pretzel rods and chocolate (chips).

Your most important instruction is as follows: make sure you’ve got a sturdy, good quality pretzel rod.  Otherwise, you might end up with broken rods and then the world as we know it will be over.  Just kidding… unless you’re making these tomorrow (December 21, 2012). ;)

As for the decorations… you can literally do whatever you want… endless possibilities!

For this batch, I rolled (pun intended) with various holiday sprinkles, graham cracker crumbs, and Heath bar toffee baking bits.

My favorite so far has been the toffee pretzels.  Chewy, crunchy, sweet, and salty… they’ve got it all!

I recently started adding some shortening to my chocolate chips when I”m melting them because I was having an awful time getting it to a consistency that actually worked for coating/spreading. I’m glad to see someone with much more baking prowess does the same thing – I’m on the right track! haha

Yep — if I’m using chocolate chips, they almost always end up a chunky mess if I microwave them on their own! A spoonful of shortening does the trick!

I love chocolate covered pretzels…I would be eating all of these. I never thought to roll them in graham crackers or toffee. Awesome idea!

I literally was just grabbing random things I found in my mom’s stash of baking supplies. I highly recommend the graham cracker crumbs and toffee together!

Yum! I will have to check out your pretzels. I agree, chocolate + pretzel is a favorite combo of mine!

Can you use butter instead of shortening?

Hi Jackie, if you use butter, the chocolate may not melt as easily. I recommend shortening, which has always worked best for me.
